Food grade plastics – why is it important to us?

The majority of food and beverages today are processed in equipment and then transported before it reaches the consumers. In order for the end product to sustain high levels of nutrition and rich flavor, the process often includes high pressure, heating, or cooling. In addition, the food or liquid may contain acids, which in turn increases the quality requirement on the components in the processing equipment.

The term “food grade” refers to the quality of the material used in the equipment and devices and it must meet certain standards of purity. Such plastics cannot contain dyes and other additives deemed harmful to humans. A plastic tube in a food processing equipment cannot leach dangerous chemical compounds into the exposed product to be consumed. Hence, a food grade material is non-toxic and safe for consumption.
